What Causes Cystitis?
There is not always an obvious reason as to what causes cystitis in some women but possible causes include:
- Infection from intestinal bacteria is the most common cause of cystitis, especially amongst women who have a short urethra (the tube through which urine passes from the bladder to the outside)
- Bruising from sexual activity (known sometimes as "honeymoon cystitis")
- Irritation caused by perfumes, deodorants, shower gel or bubble bath
- Changes in hormones after the menopause may make the urinary system more easily irritated by cystitis
