Recurrent Cystitis

Although cystitis is very common, most women will only get one or two bouts in their lifetime4. However, recurring bouts of cystitis occur in some women.

Why do some women have recurring cystitis?

Some women have recurring bouts of cystitis and there may be no apparent cause. However for some women, the following may contribute:

  • In some women, recurring bouts of cystitis only occur after the menopause. This is because the menopause may cause changes to the lining of the urethra and vagina. Also, less mucus is produced in the vagina which means the defence against infection is weaker
  • Bladder or kidney problems may lead to infections being more likely. For example, kidney stones or conditions which cause urine to “pool” and not drain properly
  • Having sex increases the chance of cystitis in some women

What are the treatment options for recurrent cystitis?

Women who suffer from recurrent cystitis should consult their doctor.

Prompt self-treatment of each bout of cystitis

  • Some women who frequently suffer from cystitis are given a supply of antibiotics by their doctor to keep on 'standby'. Symptoms can then be treated as soon as they begin, without seeing a doctor.

Antibiotic prevention

  • This means taking a low dose of an antibiotic regularly. A three-six month course may be advised.
  • You may still get cystitis even if you are taking regular antibiotics and this may be caused by a bacterium that is resistant to the antibiotic you are taking.
  • A urine sample will be needed to see which bacterium is causing the cystitis.

HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy)

  • This may reduce recurrent cystitis in women who are past the menopause. HRT contains oestrogen, which can reverse some of the changes to the tissues around the vagina caused by the menopause.
