When to see your doctor

If your cystitis hasn't cleared after three or four days, you should see your doctor who may prescribe a short course of antibiotics. A laboratory test of your urine may be carried out to identify which bacterium is causing the problem. Once this is known, the most appropriate antibiotic can be prescribed.

You should seek advice from your GP or a genitourinary medicine clinic if10:

  • You are male (cystitis is rarer in men and can be more difficult to self-treat)
  • You have had cystitis for more than three days
  • You have had more than one attack recently
  • You are pregnant
  • You have blood in your urine
  • You have other symptoms such as vaginal discharge
  • You think your cystitis symptoms could be caused by another infection

Some people suffer from chronic cystitis. As chronic cystitis is a long lasting condition, sufferers should seek treatment from their doctor.
