What Causes Cystitis?

There is not always an obvious reason why some women get cystitis more than others, but possible causes include:

  • Infection from intestinal bacteria is the most common cause of cystitis, especially amongst women who have a short urethra (the tube through which urine passes from the bladder to the outside)
  • Bruising from sexual activity (known sometimes as “Honeymoon cystitis”)
  • Irritation caused by perfumes, deodorants, shower gel or bubble bath
  • Changes in hormones after the menopause may make the urinary system more easily irritated by cystitis
